The Good Grinder

When a tree comes down, the stump gets left behind. Stump grinding is the process of using a specialized machine to chew up the remaining part of the tree to 12 inches below the surface of your yard, turning it into wood chips and clearing the way for a cleaner, more usable yard.

It’s a fast and efficient way to deal with an ugly stump without tearing up your whole property with an excavator or dynamite. Instead of digging out huge roots and making a mess, the grinder takes the stump down in controlled passes until it’s ground low enough to cover, seed, or landscape over. We even do Caliper grinds and go 24 inches below surface level for the same spot tree plantings.

How does it work?

First, the area around the stump gets cleared so the machine can get in and work safely. Then the stump grinder is positioned over the stump, and the cutting wheel starts shaving the wood away layer by layer (it’s oddly satisfying).

The machine doesn’t rip the whole stump out at once (which could cause surrounding damage), It grinds it down gradually, which keeps the job cleaner and provides more control over the stump removal process. For most residential jobs, the goal is to get the stump low enough that it’s no longer in the way.

What happens after?

Once the stump is ground out and the area has been cleaned, you’re left with a pile of wood chips where the stump was. Those chips can be hauled away in your green bin, used to fill the hole or used for your Garden. All chips and mulch are left on site for your convenience.

From there, the spot can be leveled off with soil and prepared for grass, seed, or whatever else you want to do with the space. In other words, the stump is gone, and your yard gets a fresh start.

Why do people grind stumps?

A stump in the yard is more than just an eyesore. It can get in the way of mowing, take up usable space, attract pests, and make the whole property look unfinished. Grinding it down is a simple way to clean things up and get your yard back.

For most homeowners and contractors, it’s the easiest route. It saves time, keeps the yard looking sharp, and gets rid of a problem that just sits there until someone deals with it. Call your uncle, he has an axe. That will work right? Call us before he uses dynamite!.
