2. The Financial Liability Trap (No Insurance)
This is where the $50 quote gets terrifying. If an operator or contractor isn’t fully insured, you are playing Russian roulette with your property. 90% of the time everything is fine, 50 bucks guy does the job, seems fair and leaves. But is it worth the risk? What are the risks?
The Flying Missile Risk: Stump grinder teeth spin at insane speeds. If a cheap machine hits a hidden rock or a forgotten piece of rebar, it launches it like a bullet. We’ve heard horror stories of uninsured operators smashing living room windows, cracking vinyl siding, or denting the neighbor’s pristine truck parked down the driveway.
Underground Utility Disasters: Tearing through an unmarked Epcor power line, a gas main, or a Telus fiber-optic cable is a nightmare. We – the pros, know how to avoid them. Sometimes it is a good idea to indeed “Call before you dig.“

3. The Hidden Costs of Rental Equipment
“I’ll just rent one!” sounds like a good idea until you actually try it. We don’t recommend rentals if the stump is more than 7 inches in diameter. So yes, basically every stump you cannot dig out by hand.
The Physical Toll and Safety Risks: These machines have massive kickback due to their lightweight. If you don’t know how to swing the pivot or balance your weight, it will drag you around the yard. Plus, unless you happen to own professional debris shields and logging-grade PPE, you’re putting yourself and your property in serious danger.
The Time and Hassle Suck: Your weekend is gone before you even start grinding. You have to drive to the rental yard, wait in line, fill out paperwork, hook up a heavy trailer, drive home, fill the machine completely afterward (or pay a massive fee), and drive it back before the clock runs out.
Underpowered Machinery: The machines you rent are small, at most 15hp gas-powered walk-behind units. A good stump grinder needs 60hp at least. Smaller grinders are to professionals what a tricycle is to a Harley-Davidson. If you have an old Edmonton Elm with a massive root flare, those rental teeth will basically just polish the wood instead of cutting it.
4. Substandard Results (The “Half-Done” Job)
Cheap operators do cheap work. How else would they afford everything? It’s a universal law. On top of that, you won’t know what a good job looks like so you’ll think they did a great job! Mind games here… Let’s avoid that.
Grinding Too Shallow: A budget operator will grind just 2 inches below the surface, call it a day, and collect their cash. But if you try to grow grass there, the soil layer is too thin, and the grass dies immediately. Every time you mow, your blades will smack into buried hardwood and your grass will be yellow.
Ignoring the Root Flare: A tree doesn’t stop at the trunk. Those massive lateral roots stretching across your lawn will stay completely intact if the operator doesn’t chase them down. You’ll still be tripping over them for the next decade and risk having suckers.
It’s your day not ours: Option 1 – Hire a guy that smokes, swears at the stump and throws a fit at their grinder and remain on your property for 5-6 hours? Option 2 – Hire a proffesional who cares about you and your property. There for only an hour at most and provides a show with the shear satisfaction of whatching your stump get eaten away swipe by swipe.
